how to keep your system files intact

This post is regarding the use of sfc.exe to check integrity of your system files in xp pro.
A common issue regd it is that when you run sfc.exe, a command prompt window quickly disappears on screen.
The correct syntax to use sfc.exe is sfc /scannow.
This initiates "Windows File Protection" and you see a dialog box as follows :

Then it prompts you to enter the xp pro cd in cd drive.

You have to enter the cd coz windows stores all necessary files in 'dllcache'.

The usual location dllcache is in system32 folder.

So in case your system files in the cache are corrupt you can replace them with
the original ones from xp cd using sfc

That's it for today. More tips to come up. happy surfing !

for XP pro users:

step 2: type regedit
step 3: goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand it, expand Control Panel in it, select 'International'
step 4: you see two strings with values AM & PM each. click it n modify the values into something more interesting like 'Morning' for AM & 'Night' for PM.

windows media player video snapshot

A very common problem encountered by most people while trying to take a snapshot/screenshot of the video being played in windows media player, is that they get only the skin of media player in it. You can't see the snapshot of video in it.

For users using version 7.0 or higher, here's the trick:

step 1. open the media player
step 2. click on the 'tools' menu and goto 'options'
step 3. click on the 'performance' tab
step 4. you see a slider of 'video acceleration'. By default it is set to 'full'. Bring the slider to 'none'.

now reopen the video file you want to watch and take a screenshot !
to take a snapshot there are many options viz :

option 1: click the 'print screen' button on keyboard and paste in MS paint.
option 2: use SnapIt ! software.
option 3: use HyperSnap Dx s/w.
option 4: use Easy Video Capture s/w.
infact there maybe many more s/w's but i found the above one's worth enlisting .

Note: when you set 'video acceleration' to none, you may not be able to watch the video fullscreen.
